Fault Finding on Low Voltage Electrical Equipment and Machines
-
- Objectives
-
This course will raise the awareness of the hazards and dangers associated with electrical equipment and machines and demonstrate safe methods of work accordingly.
On completion of the course delegates will be able to diagnose simple electrical faults and have an understanding of the possible causes and carry out necessary isolations and repairs, whilst understanding there limitations and hazards associated with the electrical systems and machines.
- Content
-
Basic electrical safety
Current legislation,
Safe isolation procedures
Safe systems of work,
The safe use of multi meters (and their limitations)
Proving for “dead”.
Ohms law and basic terminology
Conductors, Insulators, Volts, Amperes,
Ohms, Watts a.c and d.c.
3 Phase configurations star and delta.
The operation and testing of the three phase squirrel cage induction motor: -
The safe use of a insulation resistance tester (megger)
Phase balance and earth continuity testing.
Practical exercises will include the bench testing of 3 phase induction motors and the isolation, disconnection, reconnection and dynamic testing of 415v induction motors.
Examine the component parts of a direct on line and star/delta motor starter panel to include
Isolators, fuses, contactors, overloads
M.C.B’s, push buttons, switches, relays and timers
Investigate and understand basic schematic diagrams.
Wire, from a schematic diagram a motor starter panel with the power, control, indication circuits.
Static and dynamic testing of the panel at the relevant stages.
Practical Fault finding exercises on 415v motor start units to include :-
Star/Delta, auto – transformer, primary resistance and sequenced control.
An overview of ladder logic to recognise inputs and output signals.
